President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the United States will gain control of Greenland, despite the island’s leaders repeatedly stating that it is not for sale.

In a statement to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said, “I think we’re going to have it,” claiming that Greenland’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us.” However, this assertion has been met with skepticism by many, including Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede.

Both leaders have made it clear that Greenland will not be sold, with Frederiksen stating that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” and Egede emphasizing that decisions about the island’s land use are “Greenland’s business.” Despite this, Trump remains optimistic about the prospect of US control.

The president’s interest in acquiring Greenland is reportedly driven by the island’s strategic location and natural resources. Greenland lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it a crucial location for military and economic purposes. Additionally, the island is rich in rare earth minerals, uranium, and iron, which could provide a significant boost to the US economy.

However, Trump’s comments have sparked concern in Denmark, with some officials describing the conversation as “horrendous.” The Danish prime minister reportedly insisted that Greenland is not for sale during a heated phone call with Trump, and other European officials have expressed alarm at the prospect of US military or economic force being used to acquire the island.

For now, it remains unclear how Trump plans to pursue his goal of gaining control of Greenland. While some residents have expressed openness to increased cooperation with the US on defense and mining issues, others have made it clear that they will not be swayed by Trump’s claims. As one fishing boat captain put it, “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders.”
